fluid-work IRC Logs-2012-01-05

[10:41:41 CST(-0600)] <colinclark> hey fluid-everyone, standup totally slipped my mind

[10:41:50 CST(-0600)] <colinclark> Here's my update, in the channel:

[10:42:13 CST(-0600)] <colinclark> 1. I spent most of yesterday starting to work out a better articulation of our plans for the GPII's technology

[10:42:28 CST(-0600)] <colinclark> Which of course many of you experienced as my ramble-y presentation

[10:42:39 CST(-0600)] <colinclark> Today, I'd like to build on that momentum

[10:42:48 CST(-0600)] <colinclark> and get some of the material into pictorial form and up into the wiki

[10:43:14 CST(-0600)] <colinclark> This morning, jessm and I met with Vidyo, one of the potential video conferencing vendors for the IDI

[10:43:22 CST(-0600)] <colinclark> and they taught us a bit about good microphones

[10:43:41 CST(-0600)] <colinclark> Then jessm and I proceeded to have a fairly awesome meeting using only and iPhone and an iPad

[10:44:00 CST(-0600)] <colinclark> I gather it starts to get tiring to hold up an iPhone the whole time while in a meeting

[10:44:30 CST(-0600)] <jessm> fluid-everyone: colinclark's mind slip affected me and has me musing about edupunk

[10:44:57 CST(-0600)] <colinclark> Last thing: I'm applying with Github for non-profit status for the IDI organization so that we can start to organize a private infrastructure space for our new cloud architecture within Github, which will be cool. This'll give us that private space we need for things like configuration files, etc.

[10:44:58 CST(-0600)] <jessm> as mentioned, we had a good call with Vidyo – now i'm going "shopping" for better audio equipment and diving into the video conf. RFP

[10:45:00 CST(-0600)] <colinclark> That's it for me

[10:47:16 CST(-0600)] <colinclark> anastasiac and cindyli: I know michelled is away today because she's moving. Are you both feeling cool and productive in terms of Video Player next steps?

[10:47:56 CST(-0600)] <anastasiac> colinclark, I'd good. Writing test, which is great

[10:48:05 CST(-0600)] <colinclark> Tests are always great, yes (smile)

[10:48:39 CST(-0600)] <cindyli> yes, colinclark, i'm half-way thru replacing decorator rendering with sub-components

[10:49:24 CST(-0600)] <colinclark> awesome, cindyli

[10:49:27 CST(-0600)] <colinclark> can't wait to see it

[10:49:36 CST(-0600)] <cindyli> soon

[10:52:32 CST(-0600)] <avtar> colinclark, jessm: i've helped someone set up a pretty economical podcast config which involved using this external mic http://www.samsontech.com/samson/products/microphones/usb-microphones/gomic/

[10:52:48 CST(-0600)] <avtar> the audio quality was quite remarkable

[10:53:02 CST(-0600)] <colinclark> If Tony Iommi uses it, it must be good!

[10:54:18 CST(-0600)] <avtar> roger waters as well

[10:54:28 CST(-0600)] <avtar> i guess both of them are really into voip

[10:54:31 CST(-0600)] <jessm> wow, guys, i have no idea who these dudes are

[10:54:44 CST(-0600)] <colinclark> jessm: You know The Clash

[10:54:57 CST(-0600)] <colinclark> Which, in my book, is really so much better than either Floyd or Sabbath

[10:54:58 CST(-0600)] <jessm> colinclark: by hyperlink (smile)

[10:54:59 CST(-0600)] <colinclark> So who cares?

[10:55:20 CST(-0600)] <colinclark> avtar: So, you saw our experience with Vidyo the other day

[10:55:39 CST(-0600)] <colinclark> interestingly enough, Vidyo's sales engineer admitted outright that their echo cancellation was really not great

[10:55:52 CST(-0600)] <colinclark> And his advice was a combined speaker/mic that did hardware cancellation

[10:56:00 CST(-0600)] <colinclark> The sales guy used one and it was quite good

[10:56:09 CST(-0600)] <colinclark> when jessm put in earbuds, it was like a whole other experience

[10:56:14 CST(-0600)] <jessm> yep

[10:56:16 CST(-0600)] <colinclark> completely different from our last call with jessm

[10:56:21 CST(-0600)] <colinclark> no apparent lag or clipping

[10:56:22 CST(-0600)] <jessm> avtar: this is the one they recommended: http://www.jabra.com/na-us/headsetsolutions/pages/jabraspeak410.aspx

[10:56:27 CST(-0600)] <colinclark> we actually interrupted each other for fun

[10:56:30 CST(-0600)] <avtar> hmm

[10:56:41 CST(-0600)] <avtar> but how will earphones work with multiple people in one location?

[10:57:05 CST(-0600)] <avtar> s/one/both/

[10:57:06 CST(-0600)] <colinclark> that's the key

[10:57:15 CST(-0600)] <colinclark> it'll have to be a mic/speaker unit like the jabra

[10:57:58 CST(-0600)] <jessm> avtar: in other words, our speakerphone solutions aren't adequate

[10:58:14 CST(-0600)] <colinclark> It's not ideal… clearly Skype just has better software echo cancellation

[10:58:31 CST(-0600)] <colinclark> good enough to handle the built-in mic/speaker combination in a mac book or cinema display

[10:58:49 CST(-0600)] <avtar> gotcha

[10:59:02 CST(-0600)] <avtar> looks like neat hardware

[10:59:06 CST(-0600)] <colinclark> The video quality and smoothness is pretty exceptional on Vidyo

[10:59:19 CST(-0600)] <colinclark> even with my dismal home network

[10:59:56 CST(-0600)] <avtar> what's your upstream bandwidth at home?

[10:59:58 CST(-0600)] <jessm> and colinclark avtar the engineer promised a better experience in a month with the new release

[11:00:21 CST(-0600)] <colinclark> avtar: well, there's a gap between theory and practice when it comes to my home network

[11:00:34 CST(-0600)] <colinclark> Upstream claims to be something like 2 Mb

[11:00:45 CST(-0600)] <colinclark> Speed tests typically show it at about 600 Kb

[11:00:46 CST(-0600)] <colinclark> which is so bad

[11:00:50 CST(-0600)] <avtar> jessm: to paraphrase someone "i don't normally read fiction, but when i do it's promises made by engineers in chats"

[11:00:56 CST(-0600)] <colinclark> lol

[11:00:57 CST(-0600)] <colinclark> lol

[11:01:01 CST(-0600)] <avtar> just kidding

[11:01:05 CST(-0600)] <avtar> i'm sure he's being honest

[11:01:08 CST(-0600)] <colinclark> (smile)

[11:01:18 CST(-0600)] <colinclark> I so like having avtar around when we meet with vendors (smile)

[11:01:30 CST(-0600)] <colinclark> You should have seen him with HP!

[11:02:47 CST(-0600)] <avtar> haha

[11:03:00 CST(-0600)] <avtar> let's see what the next meeting brings

[11:03:15 CST(-0600)] <colinclark> I'm quite worried about timelines and the Nebula pilot

[11:03:22 CST(-0600)] <colinclark> That's the one advantage to just doing the VOR

[11:03:32 CST(-0600)] <colinclark> we get the boxes, Nebula comes up and sets everything up, and off we go

[11:03:39 CST(-0600)] <jessm> ha! well, i will say if the sales team had promised it I'd be more skeptical

[11:03:40 CST(-0600)] <colinclark> but on the other hand, we've got lots of iceberg chipping to do

[11:04:12 CST(-0600)] <jessm> avtar: how's the iceberg coming? are you fixin' to plan how to do the thing?

[11:06:20 CST(-0600)] <colinclark> chisel vs. sledgehammer

[11:09:07 CST(-0600)] <colinclark> Ooh, NASA is releasing their FORTRAN unit testing framework as open source software: http://code.nasa.gov/projects/

[11:09:09 CST(-0600)] <colinclark> Can't wait!

[11:09:19 CST(-0600)] <avtar> jessm, colinclark: i've had to work on smaller icebergs since our last talk. jorge not being able to log into the idrc jabber server and a different approach to resolving the bell community wiki problem. jotting stuff down in my notebook as i go along but hoping to dedicate time to nagios and ganglia once the move and kasper's tasks are done.

[11:10:27 CST(-0600)] <jessm> avtar: well, if there's anything you think i might help with, lemme know

[11:11:02 CST(-0600)] <colinclark> And let me know if you need me to bring some tarps for tomorrow's server move (smile)

[11:11:59 CST(-0600)] <avtar> the forecast isn't calling for rain/snow tomorrow now

[11:12:21 CST(-0600)] <avtar> but i spoke to bert and he said that he'll either bring a tarp or large garbage bags tomorrow (tongue)

[11:12:29 CST(-0600)] <avtar> brb

[11:13:51 CST(-0600)] <colinclark> nothing like tossing our server's into a couple of garbage bags

[11:14:12 CST(-0600)] <colinclark> anastasiac and cindyli: Here's a list of keyboard controls for Firefox's built-in video player http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Viewing%20video%20in%20Firefox%20without%20a%20plugin#w_keyboard-controls

[11:14:35 CST(-0600)] <anastasiac> colinclark, thanks
