How to Use the Wiki

Table of Contents

Creating an account and logging in

  1. If you do not have an account on the wiki, select "Sign up" in the top-right corner. You will be prompted to provide a name, email address, a username (which is used to log into the wiki), password, and answer a captcha.
  2. Log in using the Log in link at the top-right corner. Once logged in you will have the ability to create and edit content on the Right to Decide wiki space.

Creating a new wiki page

  1. Select the "Create" button near the top-left.
  2. You will then see an untitled blank document which you can add your content to.

Editing an existing wiki page

  1. Select the "Edit" button located near the top-right.

Inserting files to a wiki page

The insert option will embed a version of the file itself into the content of the page. If the file being inserted is an image, a thumbnail (smaller) version of the image will appear. If the file being inserted is a document, a document widget will appear in the page allowing users to view the document without having to download it first. The disadvantage to this approach is the inserted files may make the page hard to read or changes the layout too much (consider the "Linking files" option below instead).

  1. Navigate to the page you want to insert files to.
  2. Select the "Edit" button located near the top-right to begin editing that page.
  3. Select the "+" button in the editor button bar, then choose "Files and images" at the top of the menu.
  4. In the "Insert files and images" that appears, you can drag and drop to upload to the page, or select the "Upload files" button to choose your files.
  5. Select the files you want to insert then select the "Insert" button.
  6. The files should now be inserted into the content.

Linking to files within a wiki page

There are situations where using a text link to the file is appropriate.

  1. Navigate to the page you want to insert files to.
  2. Select the Link button in the editor button bar.
  3. In the "Insert Link" window select "Files" on the left side, then upload or choose the file you want from the list.
    1. If the file is located on a different website, select "Web link" on the left side of the "Insert Link" window. Enter the web address of the link.
  4. Enter the text for the link, then select Insert.

Reorganizing and moving pages

Sometimes it is necessary to move a page to another location in the wiki document tree. To do this:

  1. Go to the page you want to move.
  2. Select the three dots menu in the top-right corner.
  3. Select "Move" near the bottom of the menu.
  4. In the "Move Page" window that appears, specify the new parent for the page by using the different search and browse options in the left side.
  5. Then select the Move button

Making Comments on a Page

  1. To make comments on a wiki page, you must first have an account and be logged in.
  2. Once logged in, go to the page you want to make a comment.
  3. Scroll to the bottom of the page - there will be a text area for you to write comments.

Tagging Users

You can tag users in page content or in comments. Tagged users will be notified according to their notification settings in their user accounts. To tag a user:

  1. While editing a wiki page or writing a comment, type "@".
  2. You can now start typing the name of the person you want to tag and choose the user from the list that appears.

Exercise 1: Create a Page and Link it

  1. Create a page here and give it a title of an animal from your local area.
  2. In the body of this new page, upload an image of this animal and save it.
  3. Now edit this page "How to Use the Wiki" page and add a link to your new animal page in the list below, and save it.
  4. Congratulations! You just created your first wiki page and linked to it from another page.

Exercise 2: Collaborative Editing

  1. In your group, designate one person to create a page and give it a title of an animal you all agree on. Save the page.
  2. Each person can go to this new page and edit it simultaneously. Add details about this animal such as images, statistics, or links to other websites.
  3. TODO: Finish this.
