Goals

  • Needs and preferences gathering for online job-seeking experience
  • Outcomes of Session 1 will feed into Session 2

Activities

Small group or paired activity to share "pie in the sky" vision for an online job-seeking tools and resources

1. Individual exercise - What is your dream vision of a job seeking experience?

  • What is your dream vision for a job seeking experience?
  • Use whatever tools or techniques that help you creatively: draw, write, make a montage etc.
  • You will then have an opportunity to share your dream visions with others when you join your small group.
    • If you don't want to share details of your dream vision, you can describe it in more general terms.
  • Prompts:
    • What are the things about the job seeking process that creates stress or creates challenges for you?
    • What are the qualities you want of the job seeking process to help make it better / pleasant for you?
    • Now create your dream vision job-seeking experience, assuming there are no limits on what is possible
      • a sales pitch is one way your can articulate your dream vision
    • Can be specific about a particular experience or incident, or it can be broad and general.
  • Worksheet given to participants

2. Small Group Activity - Create a Needs Map

  • In your small group, share your dream vision with your group
  • Taking into consideration each individual dream vision, you will create a Needs Map* for your group.
    • By working with your group to create a collaborative Needs Map you may discover common needs, conflicting needs, or needs that you hadn't yet realised
    • The goal is not to generalise or come up with "average" needs but rather to fully map the spectrum of needs and start to identify relationships between them
    • Don't worry about conflicting needs, this can be a generative space where creative ideas flourish!
  • Groups will then share their Needs Map(s) back with the larger group
    • If they prefer not to show their creation, they can describe it, or share related text or writing
  • Suggested tools:
    • Excalidraw
    • Google Docs - In Google Docs, you can create links to headers in the document. In this way you can create branches, links, or relationships to other parts of the document by using headers and the insert link tool
  • Facilitator notes:
    • Ask small group which tool they would like to use, they can use both if it helps but most will likely use one
    • Facilitator creates the Google Doc or Excalidraw drawing, sharing the link with everyone in the group so they can join
    • At the end of the session, these links are saved so the team can reference them later.

*What is a Needs Map?

A Needs Map is a representation of the various needs, preferences, and desires that should be satisfied in order for you to get to your goal (i.e. finding a job). It can help you identify similar needs, differing or opposing needs, or emerging themes and patterns. It can help you to prioritise your needs or the needs of your group.

You will be creating landmarks and mapping paths that will help to gather and clarify your group's needs. Landmarks may be individual needs, groups of needs, or challenges or barriers that force you to stop, turn around, or detour. The different landmarks on the Needs Map can be grouped or connected to show their relationships. In the end, your Needs Map might look less of a linear path, but a web of interconnected paths.

Landmarks can be made up of words, drawings, photos, or whatever helps you to best communicate your ideas.

Your Needs Map can be messy, it may reveal several different paths or a networks of connections,

Your group's Needs Map will be used in Session 2 to help come up with with features that will get job seekers where they need to go.

Administration

  • Encourage participants to think "outside the box" of any job-seeking tools and resources they've used in the past - online or offline.
  • Ask participants to come with the tools they use for creative expression?
  • We could also provide templates or prompts to get started
  • Give some examples of a Needs Map. For example: "My Needs Map for an Ideal Movie-Going Experience"
  • This session could possibly be carried out as a community-led approach - send out packages and gather them
  • How do you create a Needs Map so the process is inclusive and accessible?
  • Possible tools: JamBoard, FigJam, Excalidraw, Google Docs

Co-design Session 2

Goal

  • Create ideas for solutions that meet particular needs and preferences for online job seeking

Activities

1. Small Group Exercise - Create some solutions

Working in small groups, choose 2 or 3 Needs Maps from the previous workshop (does not have to be your own map) and create things that meets those needs.

  • There is no right or wrong approach to this, and create as many or as few things as your group wants.
    • Possible approaches:
      • start with a single need and create different ways to satisfy that need.
      • combine different, but similar needs, and come up with a creative solution that helps all of them.
    • Encourage the inclusive design practice of "broader beneficial impact".
  • The objective is to express ideas that begin to satisfy needs that help toward accomplishing goals / dream visions.

2. Sharing Ideas

Each group will have a chance to share their ideas to the rest of the group.

3. Individual Reflection

Having hearing and seeing from each group, their ideas and solutions, you now have time to reflect back on your dream vision from Workshop 1.

  • Did you see anything today that helps you toward your dream vision?
  • What is something interesting that stood out to you?
  • What is something new you learned or have not considered before?
  • What is something you feel has not been addressed?

Administration

  • Work in same group as in Workshop 1, or form different groups?
  • list of desired features without much structure/design

      1. Advantage: participants coming up with features themselves based on their own experiences/ideas may lead to more creative solution
