In 2011, the Decapod Project had the opportunity to participate in the JSTOR-MacArthur digitization project in Nigeria. The purpose of the project was to build digitization capacity and exchange best practices - the Decapod Project aided this project by providing a technology component intended to help digitization of fragile material. In total there were 2 institutions selected for this project: Bayero University, Kano (or BUK); and University of Ibanan (or UI).
After an initial fact-finding trip to BUK and UI in June 2011, the Decapod project prescribed hardware to aid digitization consisting of photography equipment, a high quality flat-bed scanner, and a laptop computer running an early version of Decapod (version 0.5a).
The knowledge gained from this project has allowed the Decapod Project to improve designs and add new functionality.
