Mobile user testing, Draft 8, User 2 (November 20, 2009)

Notes

Pre-visit scenario

Task: How would you decide whether or not to go to the museum that week?

- Would check for opening time, ticket prices, and what special exhibits are on
- At home screen, would select Visitor Information, and expect
  - Opening times
  - Ticket prices
  - Tour times
  - Maps: both where it's located, and museum floor plans
  - Location
  - Contact information
- Would look at the exhibitions, to see whether there are special things going on and when they end
- Selected Exhibitions  - Observes a list of current exhibitions
  - Doesn't understand what "Event today" means
  - Assumes that all of the exhibitions listed are on right now, and that perhaps "Event today" means there's a special thing going on today
  - Would likely look at upcoming exhibitions too, to see if the museum has other things she might want to go to that aren't on right now
    - Taps on "Jewish Painters of Montreal", and hope to see more about it
    - Would also like to see whether the exhibition costs more, because that would influence her choice
    - To get back to the previous screen, taps "Back"

Task: How would you find out more about an exhibition that's currently on?

- From the Exhibitions screen, would just click on it (tapped on Simply Montreal)
- At Simply Montreal screen,
  - Confused as to whether the elements on the screen (the ones with the chevron) are links that she clicks on to expand--expanding is how she's interpret the chevrons
  - Confused as to what the chevron/arrow does, but wants some way to see the rest of the sentence (which is cut off with ellipses); would do so by tapping it
  - Tapped "About"
    - Observes that it's not included in the regular admissions fees
    - Would tap on "Exhibition fees" to see how much more it costs
    - Tapped on "Exhibition fees"--what?! $13 extra?! [note to self: need to make clear whether it's $13 extra, or whether the $13 includes regular admission]

Q: Are you satisfied with the breadth/depth of content/functionality?

- Notes that it would've been nice if it said on the first page (Exhibitions or "Simply Montreal" screen?) that it's an extra $13 to see it
- Confused about what "Check for availability" means (on home screen, under news feed)
- Can't think of anything else she'd want to know [note to self: our content breadth seems exhaustive enough]
- Wouldn't really care to look at the artifact catalog; seems less important to her than the audio/video feature
- Of the video: would expect a trailer or slideshow--some sort of material to make her want to go there
- Of artifact catalog: would rather see artifact highlights, not entire catalog--something to justify going and spending $13; e.g., "There's this famous thing by this artist..."

In-museum scenario

Task: How would you go about learning more about an object you've come across that you're interested in?

- Would find out how to enter the object code
- Tapped "Enter object code" from home screen
- Entered object code: asked, "Does it just go automatically, or do I have to press enter somewhere?"
- At Artifact View,
  - Notes that she sees a picture of what was already in front of her
  - Assumes that clicking on the left-right arrows would bring more pictures of the same thing
  - Assumes "Send" would send the information about the artifact to herself
  - Assumes "Collect" would send it to "My Collection", which she saw at the home screen
  - Asked, Is there no additional information about the artifact at the museum? (i.e., is the mobile device the only way to find out more about the artifact; in this case, we answered that what's presented on the label is all the content that's available for that object)
  - Notes that she'd click on the more button (? -- possibly referring to the "+" button) to see more
  - Wouldn't really want to see related artifacts or what other people liked, but would really like a "What's next" functionality (i.e., if there was a chimeny next to the sleigh, would want to be able to click next and see information about it rather than having to type another object code again)
  - Notes that she's the kind of person that would read every sign/content at the museum

Task: How would you go about remembering the object for the future?

- Would tap on "Collect"

Task: How would you go about leaving a note for other visitors to read?

- Would tap on "Comment"
- Asked, Did she log in? (answered, No) So it doesn't know who she is?
- Wanted to know where information was being sent to and whether comments were anonymous
(- Observes "Show tags"--asks, Are these user-generated or museum tags? (answered, What do you think they are?) Museum tags)
- At Comment Entry Screen, typed in her name with on-screen keyboard
  - Confused as to what "Previous" and "Next" do
  - Confused as to what the difference between "Done" and "Submit" are--assumes that "Done" and "Submit" do the same thing, unless "Done" just hides the keyboard?
- Asked, So comments aren't moderated?

Task: Continuing on "learning more about object" task...

- Tapped on "Show tags"
  - Assumes the tags under there are user-generated
  - Assumes the number beside the tag word to mean the number of items that have been tagged with that word
  - Asks, Are the tags ordered?
  - Notes that she's not really a big believer of tags
- Tapped on "Show audio/video"
  - Would expect sound clips and videos
  - Tapped on a video, expect it to pop up on top of the existing screen, but take up the entire screen
