Licensing for fastXmlPull.js

Overview

Fluid Infusion uses portions of a XML SAX parser implemented in JavaScript by the XML For Script project. We have adapted and modified the code from their xmlsax.js file.

This parser was originally released under an LGPL license. We made our modifications available in compliance with the license. However, there is an ambiguity about the compatibility of the ECL 2.0 license and LGPL. As a result, we contacted the maintainer of XML For Script, Dimitry Khudorozhkov to ask if he would be willing to license the parser to us with a clearly compatible license.

Dimitry agreed to license us the parser under the zlib/libpng license. He asked us to go ahead and simply add this license notice to our xmlFastPull.js file.

Hi Dimitry,

I'm the technical lead for the Fluid Project, an open community
dedicated helping improve the usability and accessibility of open
source software. http://fluidproject.org/

As part of our Infusion JavaScript application framework, we've built
a client-side template renderer that helps developers render user
interfaces in an unobtrusive style. Information about it is available
here:

http://wiki.fluidproject.org/display/fluid/Renderer http://wiki.fluidproject.org/display/fluid/Fluid+Renderer+-+Background

I understand that you're the current maintainer of the XML for Script
project. We're using your excellent JavaScript SAX parser as part of
our renderer. Since our implementation doesn't need all the features
of a SAX parser, we are using only the core engine of the parser,
consisting of modified portions of the code in your xmlsax.js file. As
per your LGPL license, we've shared these modifications back under the
original license. You can see the code here in our repository:

https://source.fluidproject.org/svn/fluid/infusion/trunk/src/webapp/lib/fastXmlPull/js/fastXmlPull.js

Fluid Infusion is dual-licensed under both the BSD and Educational
Community License 2.0. ECL is an Apache-style license used by many
academic open source projects.

Given the FSF and Apache Foundation's ambiguous positions on the
compatibility of the Apache and LGPL licenses, we're concerned that
there may be difficulties with us redistributing our code alongside
LGPL libraries. We really like your library a lot, and would love to
continue using it. Given that copyright holder can grant other
licenses, I'm wondering if you would be willing to share the code in
xmlsax.js with the Fluid community under a BSD or similar license that
would allow us to continue using your libraries without fear of
conflicts.

Let me know if this is something you're willing to consider. And don't
hesitate to let me know if you have any questions, or if I can help
explain the issue in more detail.

Best regards,

Colin

Here's my email to the maintainer of the LGPL code we use in the Fluid
Renderer. Keep your fingers crossed that we get a positive response
from him.

Hi Colin,

is it a good idea if I double-license the parser you need with both LGPL and zlib/libpng?

Dimitry,

Thanks so much for your response. zlib/libpng looks just fine, and I
really appreciate your willingness to accommodate our project.

Do you want to send me a copy of the zlib/libpng version of your
license header for the file, or should I simply add it in alongside
the LGPL license currently in xmlsax.js?

Colin

Just add it right after LGPL.
