Shouldn't we be looking at version 2.6, since that's now being worked on? 3.0? Is there a reason we'd look at 2.5.3?
Without much knowledge of xsl or the meaning of the xml that uPortal's xsl references, I've looked at skinning for 2.5.3, 2.6, and 6.0. They're each so different, and the customization interfaces are so different!

Kathy raises an important point. Our target for solutions may be 3.0, but our options for walkthrough environments may include earlier releases. I think we can learn a lot from looking at services built on earlier versions, keeping in mind that some obvious deficiencies may have already been addressed. I have a feeling that there are a lot of usability and accessibility factors associated with how channel/portlet developers have used edit modes and window states. Some real content management issues may be revealed here, independent of the underlying uPortal release.
