Baby bliss bot onscreen keyboard video recording

Description:

The Baby Bliss Bot project at the IDRC would like to design an editor for customizing on-screen keyboards (OSK) for people with disabilities. Baby Bliss users can use the onscreen keyboard to select a symbol which then can lead to another level of keys or keyboard. For instance, if one presses the "transportation" key, it opens the transportation keyboard. From there, someone could go even deeper into another level of keys.

The project team would like you to help generate ideas for an editor that will allow users to create different keyboards, keyboard levels, and navigation between levels of keyboards.

Designing for Whole Body Interaction with Children

Description:

Whole body interaction environments are increasingly common in informal learning settings, including museums. Empirical research demonstrates that such environments can afford children opportunities to engage in learning with embodied metaphors, and play. However, less research has investigated young children’s social interaction in such settings. This talk presents a design research approach and findings from a study that investigated young children’s social interaction in whole body interaction environments. Findings demonstrate that young children engage in various forms of movement-based play during interaction, which can foster social bonding and support embodied meaning making. The talk concludes with design considerations and suggestions that can support designers, and design researchers, working from an embodiment perspective and within inclusive design

Eudaemonic Design as a Co-created Approach to Health and Well-being: An Exemplar Case with Older Adults at HomeCommunity WorkshopJenna MikusDec 13, 20222 - 3pm ETHome is central to who we are as humans. It shapes us. At a time when COVID-19-related physical distancing has prompted a global live/work/play from home pervasiveness, there is a growing demand to conceptualize how homes can encourage flourishing health and well-being. Developing this understanding is especially necessary when contemplating the impact on vulnerable demographics, such as the rapidly growing older adult population who desire to age-in-place but do not necessarily have the infrastructure and support needed to do so. Based on co-designed futuring activities conducted with older adults and designers, this research focuses on understanding what a flourishing home could look and feel like when building on the neo-Aristotelian concept of eudaemonia (literally defined as eu (good or health) + daimon (true self)), which correlates to people being the best versions of themselves. Eudaemonic well-being has evolved in the field of psychology as a means of proactively designing for flourishing health and well-being via Self Determination Theory, but it has yet to be explored in a built environment context. By considering eudaemonia as a worldview, this research examines how home-based design can prompt optimal health and well-being—not only by applying the resulting Eudaemonic Design model and principles to the home environment but also by following a respectful design approach to precipitate virtually-engaged participants to feel empowered, experience agency, and act as their best eudaemonic selves.

Human-robot interaction for inclusive coding educationCommunity WorkshopMaysa Borges GamaNov 29, 20222 - 3pm ET

Educational Robotics is a widely researched and applied field, but most robotics courses for children and young are not designed or adapted for learners with disability. This context is even less explored when we observe the use of social robots for education since most human-robot interactions designed for people with disability are focused in rehabilitation, mobility, or diagnosis. Robots, especially social robots, can act as powerful tools for teaching coding to school-aged children with special needs. In this meeting, I am going to present a status report on my master's course project that seeks to adapt the Weavly platform experience into a human-robot interaction.

The Canadian Typography Archives website requires an image inspection function that allows a user to magnify an artifact and pan over all parts of the artifact.

Here is a link to an example of image inspection we are seeing as an exemplar experience using mouse functionality

The CTA team has had some discussion and noted the following:

  • WCAG 2.1 (note AODA references WCAG 2.0)
  • What to do:
    • Provide controls that perform same behaviour as the mouse
    • When image opens buttons appear and are in the focus order
  • Mobile: pinching, alternative is zoom in zoom out and button controls as well.
  • concern: Buttons for keyboard manoeuvre may not be a smooth experience

We look forward to the discussion!

Dobble Debate

dev site

A continuation of the Design Crit from January 18, 2022, focused on the Bake Your Own experience.
Dobble Debate: debating with a difference, is a game that facilitates discussions and learning about human difference. The game employs the powers of play and humor to catalyze open discussion and compassionate thinking around topics that are often considered taboo. Players are challenged to rethink assumptions they may have around what it means to be disabled or have lived different experiences from their own.
Dobble Debate recognizes that every individual’s lived experience is different, and changes significantly based on their current environment. Therefore, we explicitly acknowledge D/deafness, disability, differing abilities , autism, and neurodiversity plus (DDDAND+). This acronym does not cover all the diverse identities usually lumped under ‘disability’; we are using it to draw attention to the variety of human experience. The label of ‘disability’ runs the risk of minimizing the diversity of lived differences.

The goal of the Canadian Typography Archives (CTA) is to create a free and open dedicated online space for documenting the histories of type and typography in Canada, whether currently public, privately held, still to be discovered, or not yet acknowledged or represented. To begin with the site will focus on pre-digital histories (approximately before 1985).

On July 27th, we presented mid-fidelity wireframes of the CTA header and footer and received good feedback on ways to improve the functionality to meet accessibility guidelines. Figma File from the session

As an extension of the session, we are looking to center the discussion around the individual artifact (content) pages and get feedback on various elements within the layout in regards to different interaction states, content layout and overall functionality.

Co-design Community of PracticeWorkshopCherylMar 30, 2021

Description:

In many settings, especially professional ones, we are often trained to avoid “failure” and experimentation and strive for perfectionism. However, co-design is all about experimentation. In this Community of Practice meeting, we want to explore how we make space to create a safe space to “fail”, flail, look silly, and speak honestly - both for our co-designers, and ourselves as facilitators.

We'd love to explore this topic with other practitioners of co-design.

We’re hoping to start a series of Co-design Community of Practice meetings, with this meeting being the first of many. A community of practice is a group of people who share an interest for something, and they get together to share knowledge and learn how to do it better. We’re hoping to do this for co-design, since many of us are just starting co-design on our projects.

We’ll use this first meeting to talk about different elements of our co-design practice: What’s happening on our projects, our interests, challenges, and more. We can also brainstorm what we want this community of practice to be.

Designing and Programming with MultiplicityWorkshopPhilip TchernavskijMar 18, 2020

Meeting Notes

I am going to present my doctoral research work, focusing primarily on the theories and methods I applied and appropriated. My thesis project was part of a larger grant-funded project to develop conceptual and technical models for software that help people better control the many devices, apps, and documents they deal with in our era of ubiquitous computing. Control is not just a mediated by software architecture, but also by the social and economic arrangements in which software is made and used. To study these interacting phenomena, I drew from the disciplines of infrastructural ethnography, cultural-historical activity theory, software engineering, and more. I'm going to discuss how these concepts were useful to me, how they might be useful to this community, and where I'm still struggling with them.

You can choose to attend either Tuesday or Wednesday meeting, or both.

The meeting will be hosted in the Collaboration room at 205 Richmond Street West (IDRC offices) in Toronto, and online in this Vidyo web conference room.

For more information on the Community design crits, please visit the Design Crit wiki page.

A description of the “potluck” follows below:

Come and join the Platform Coop project for a dry run of the co-design workshop we are running next week at the PCC conference. The goal of this co-design is to:

  • Identify shared needs and challenges across different people
  • Collaboratively develop designs and requirements
  • Create an action plan of how to go forward while leveraging our shared resources

To recontextualize the workshop for our group, we’ll be asking you:

  • What do you need from this potluck? What are some of the common challenges and needs we encounter in our inclusive design and development practices?
  • What can you bring to this potluck? What tools or practices can we design to support our needs?

This will be a double bill, meaning that there will be two parts:

  • Tuesday October 29 2pm to 3pm ET - We’ll use this time to identify common challenges and needs
  • Wednesday October 30 2:30pm to 4pm ET - We’ll use this time to collaboratively come up with ideas on how to address our challenges, and create an action plan on how to move forward

Note that you do not need to come to the first one to come to the second one! Drop by one, or both.

This week, we'll be joined by Grif Peterson, executive director at Peer 2 Peer University (P2PU). For the past four years, P2PU has been developing and supporting learning circles: groups of people who meet in public spaces like libraries to learn something together using online courses. Learning circles began at Chicago Public Library, and have since spread to more than 100 cities and towns around the world, including Toronto. Grif will briefly introduce the project, sharing some insights on how P2PU's conceptions of public space, online education, and peer learning have evolved during this project, with plenty of time for questions and discussion. He and Jutta have spoken a little bit about possible collaborations, and he'd love to explore that with others as well.

IDRC Website wireframesDesign CritCherylSep 18, 2019

Notes

We will be taking a look at some new IDRC website wireframes. We will be looking for feedback into the early designs and functionality of the website.

Google slides: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1GXNT97yIdTNJhNm0x7InxK2JUYyleDjFLcuIXuM9eWE/edit?usp=sharing

Figma file: https://www.figma.com/file/VjEeG0FZx7K2TtZJI4BhwS/IDRC-wireframes-design-crit-Sept-18-2019?node-id=0%3A1

As you can see, things are still pretty rough and low-fidelity right now, and we don't have all the pages designed yet.

Please feel free to leave comments on both applications, especially if you won't' be able to make it tomorrow but still want to take a peek / provide feedback!

For some context, some of the questions we're trying to answer with the website are:

- What projects does the IDRC work on?

- What is inclusive design, and how to I learn more about it / apply them to my own practice?

- What are the approaches, methods, or processes that the IDRC takes?

- Are there opportunities to get involved with the IDRC? If so, what are they?

- Who is on the team?

- What exactly does the IDRC do?

Inclusive AnalyticsDesign CritEveryoneAug 20, 2019

Video Recording

Questions to provoke discussion:

  • How do you design metrics and data tracking in such a way that it encourages collaboration?
  • How do you avoid the divisive competition that often results?
  • How do you support challenging yourself, for example, without engendering the feeling that you are being judged (from above or by other team members)?
  • How do you avoid telling only the part of the story that singles people out and fails to reflect the circumstances of the anomalous numbers?
  • If the goal of the data monitoring is to increase efficiency, how do you avoid nudging people to bypass the “difficult” clients?
  • Are there ways of capturing measures, monitoring measures, and using the measures to make decisions within the workplace that don’t look and feel like the corrosive form of surveillance management we hear about in places like Amazon fulfillment?
  • Are there things we can design into the data system that can help to encourage collaboration and a cooperative ethos, or is that dependent on what is done with the data system and beyond our control?

These questions are broad-reaching in its impact, and can apply across many domains: the workplace, within a classroom, deployment of services and products, etc.

IDRC Website Information ArchitectureDesign CritCherylAug 6, 2019

Cheryl will be leading a discussion on the information architecture of the IDRC website redesign.

I am hoping to split our hour together with two main chunks:

  1. Open discussion around questions such as:

- Who are the people coming to our website?

- What do they come here to do?

- What sorts of problems do they encounter when they try to do these things? (May help to think back to any support requests you’ve received)

- Bonus: Any ideas on how to address these issues?

  1. Critiquing a first draft site map

Link here, if you'd like to look in advance: https://docs.google.com/drawings/d/1VsW0vB1PF-gQn8fAMmPKRpny3DbhPXLkjBxxycqzDoU/edit?usp=sharing

While this discussion should stay fairly open, if you're someone who likes to have a few questions to guide your feedback, you can consider these:

    - What should stay?

    - What’s missing?

    - What is a potential red flag?

    - What are areas for further exploration?

Description:

It’s been roughly 30 years since the desktop computer revolutionized the way the graphic design industry works. For decades before that, it was the hands of industrious workers, and various ingenious machines and tools that brought type and image together on meticulously prepared paste-up boards, before they were sent to the printer. Graphic Means, explores graphic design production of the 1950s through the 1990s—from linecaster to photocomposition, and from paste-up to PDF.

Tech-Inclusion: Developing Coding Classes for Deaf Youths.

Meeting Notes

Video Recording

“Tech-Inclusion: Developing Coding Classes for Deaf Youths” will be facilitated by Claudia McKoy of Creative Amnesty. Creative Amnesty is an UpSurgence initiative that focuses on finding practical ways to include marginalized communities into our emerging tech-based economy. Last fall, the Creative Amnesty’s team worked with community leaders, interpreters and coding educators to design coding classes that were accessible for Deaf children.

At this Wednesday’s Inclusive Design research Centre community meeting at OCAD University, we are inviting the community to join in a discussion to explore how to best develop our coding classes to ensure that they are highly accessible, impactful, and cost effective. We are also seeking insights on the best tools use and what resources we ought to access to scale the project to ensure as many children as possible can enjoy the benefits of the program.

Our discussion will include three key areas of focus:

 *

Providing general and basic coding class for young children

 *

“iSee Me” – a program that trains Deaf Individuals with a tech background to become tech educators. Such a program allows young learners to see themselves and their community as members of tech community. Thus, fostering a sense of belonging and inclusion within the students.

 *

Career pathways – an initiative that established in partnerships with tech employers to create programs for Deaf individuals seeking employment in the field. The initiative would seek first to identify what skills are needed by the businesses to then train the learners in those desired skills and well as how best to prepare and assist organizations that would wish to include Deaf employees, but may lack the experience or the knowledge of the best practices.

These barriers will be examined, as well as technical and policy measures that can help remove them.

English Whitepaper

Video Recording

Description:
MyData is both an alternative vision and guiding technical principles for how we, as individuals, can have more control over the data trails we leave behind us in our everyday actions. The core idea is that we should have an easy way to see where data about us goes, specify who can use it, and alter these decisions over time. More than GDPR, MyData focuses on actionable rights - making sure that data CAN be reused easily, as long the reuse is governed ethically.

Thus, the MyData approach aims at strengthening digital human rights while opening new opportunities for businesses to develop innovative personal data based services built on mutual trust.

MyData is now in the Finnish Government agenda. The MyData declaration has been translated to nearly 10 languages worldwide and the white paper has gained good traction worldwide.

Open Knowledge Finland, Aalto University and many partners currently coordinate a large global MyData global network around the ethical use of personal data.  The network operates now in 25 locations in 20 countries, and organise a 800-person conference and regional meetups on the topic.

I

  • a collection of accessible UI components
Story telling tool
May 8

For the May 8th design crit, we will be discussing the Floe story telling tool in two different contexts: learning reflections site, and "La Planeta es la Escuela".

The description of the two contexts follow:

The goal of the Floe learning reflections site is to use the story telling tool to gather stories about unique learning styles. We plan to hold one or more sessions where we will gather stories from a broad range of participants while at the same time collecting feedback about the tool. The current version is here: https://stories.floeproject.org/

Another version of the storytelling tool is being created for our upcoming visit with Karisma, one of our SJRK partners, in Medellín Colombia. We are adding design elements from their version of the project, “La Planeta es la Escuela” or “The Planet is the School”, to the existing storytelling tool.

Description:

New Problem Statement:

Technology is an affordance that can be used to support and propagate learning in our busy, connected, global world. But how do you design for effective and engaging online learning to occur?

You design it well and provide a ‘map’ so that the learner knows:

    1. Where they are when they enter the course
    2. They see a ‘map’ of the course and directions on how to follow it
    3. They see optional ‘routes’ and ‘places to explore’

This design framework allows the instructor/faculty member/ or teacher to facilitate learning, encourage active participation, and a map of how the students will successfully arrive at the end and what they will have accomplished or experienced along the way.

Proposed Outputs of My Research Project:

A framework for developing critical wayfinding/navigation system that supports learners (in higher education, specifically at the college level) when they enter a learning environment (Course page, Course site, virtual environment, etc.,) and need to know where they are, where they are going, what they will be doing along the way, and how they get to the end successfully.

The initial conceptualization of this project is to create a course wayfinding system or map that is built based on the learning outcomes of the course or the competencies being assessed, the organization of the course in terms of content, activities, and assessments (evaluation).

Courses could then be mapped to the program outcomes or competencies.

Programs could be mapped to further educational or experience pathways, career paths, or other options that could be explored by the learner.

This project will focus on designing a course wayfinding/mapping framework, future research may take this further should I seek research funding or other learning opportunities that will allow me to continue with this concept development.

Proposed Outcomes of Research Project

Design a course blueprint template that helps the content expert (teacher, faculty or instructor) align content, activities and assessment to the learning outcomes of the course. This course blueprint will be used to design a wayfinding/mapping system that will support the learner’s journey through the course and provide them with the overview and the directions they need to successfully travel to the end of the course.

Description:

Makers Making Change is run by the Research and Development department of the Neil Squire Society; a Canadian National not-for-profit organization that uses technology, knowledge and passion to empower people with disabilities. Makers Making Change addresses issues faced by people with disabilities by utilizing the open source movement, the crowd sourcing movement, and the maker movement to create affordable, assistive technologies at the community level.

We build networks and community by hosting events to prototype and build new devices; providing a library of free, tested, open source assistive technologies; and hosting a community based “matching service” through our website where makers and people with disabilities can connect to work on projects collaboratively in their region.

8 80 Cities believes that if everything we did in our cities – from building parks to designing transportation systems - was great for eight year-olds and eighty year-olds, then we would create inclusive and thriving cities that work for everyone. Creating 8 80 Cities begins with meaningful and inclusive community engagement. This presentation will describe our unique approach to community engagement, which focuses on building trust and ensuring everyone has a voice in the city building process. Through case studies and stories from our own work in cities across North America, we’ll share how engagement can lead to the inclusive design of streets and public spaces that work for all community members.

Captivating Places: The impact of inclusive design on inclusive place attachment

Parinaz MizbanNov 15
Description:

The intent of my research is the development of new theoretical concepts for inclusive design. This research focuses on exploratory ‘empathic observation’ and attempts to find the perception for a needed paradigm shift. Non-physical factors in architectural space are proposed as a key affordance for amplifies the strength of designs for a sensory and soulful spatial design. The movement begins from the real world toward sensory relationships and then to the perception of continuity of senses in creating thought, mentality, spirit. The next step of this movement leads to moving to poeticism in order to create something beyond the senses. That is a world of imagination, dreams. Finally, this movement returns to the real world to provide the architectural pattern to expand inclusive design and has a captivating place.

Limits of design

Peter FuzesiSep 6
Description:

I am a doctoral student at Lancaster University, supervised by Professors Lucy Suchman and Carol Thomas. My doctoral research project (Working title: From designing for different users to economies of difference) stands at the intersection of Disability Studies and Science Technology and Society (STS). I am interested in how corporeal and technological norms and standards are co-articulated and circulate in bodies, devices and figures such as that of the user.
My presentation is based on an ethnographic study on how users are configured
within the UK's public healthcare system, and looks at a specialized Service Centre that delivers Environmental Control and Augmentative Alternative Communication Systems for “Clients with Complex Needs”. The site is peculiar insofar as every individual user is delivered a personalized system, which aims to take into account the user's wider social, cultural and material environment and its changes. To meet these diverse and changing needs and to retain a flexibility to re-design systems, the Service Centre functions as a site for not only designing, maintaining but also (literally) delivering and commissioning technologies. By doing so, the work practices of those working at the Centre also augment and reconfigure market relations and infrastructures, and redraw the established boundaries between development/design and use/consumption.

Although arguably the professionals in the Service Centre grapple with design problems, the language and discipline of design remains absent and the development of novel technological
devices is not seen as a primary concern. It is more fitting to describe professional practices at the Centre as the artful integration (Suchman, 1999) of existing technologies into an arrangement that works for the user in a given material and social environment. Although this iterative process of constant negotiation between the developer and individual results in several inventive solutions there are serious limitations to generalize these highly situated arrangements, specifically relevant for only one individual. This raises questions about the ways design and its products can be evaluated, and the ways standards, regimes of evidence and market success and failure frame our understanding of technology design and use. In sum, approaching and problematizing this site enables a critical reflection on the normative implications of concepts such as user, product/project, design and technology in relation to liberal individualism, mass production and commodity exchange.

a11y treeJosephFeb 8

The topic for this week's community meeting (Feb 8) is the Accessibility Tree and its relationship to WAI-ARIA.  There will be some hands-on activities and if you want to participate, you will need to download and install a couple of things.

For demonstration purposes, I am focusing on FireFox's DOM Inspector plug-in and, to a lesser extent, Apple's Accessibility Inspector.  There are other inspectors for different OSes and I'll mention them, but I won't be providing detailed instructions on installing them.

For FireFox's DOM Inspector, you need to install two plugins, in the following order:

  1. First install the Web Developer plugin:  https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/web-developer/.  After installing, restart FF to activate.
  2. Next, install the DOM Inspector plugin:  https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/dom-inspector-6622/.  Again, restart to activate.

The DOM Inspector is a tool within Web Developer.  It is accessed via Web Developer's "Tools" toolbar button, which posts a menu containing a "DOM Inspector" menu item.

The macOS accessiblity inspector is part of its XCode development kit.  As such, there is a lot to download just to get the inspector.  Also, I've only done it for macOS Sierra.  I imagine it's similar for other version of the macOS, but I'm not going to check that.  If you still want to get it, use the App Store, and look for and install "XCode".  It's free.

After the download is complete, a convenient way to launch the Accessibility Inspector is (1) "Cmd+Space", (2) enter "Accessibility Inspector" into the text entry field, and (3) hit return.  In terms of where the application actually is:  it's here:
"/Applications/XCode.app/Contents/Applications/Accessibility Inspector"

David and Kobi ( co-op students at the IDRC ), will be presenting their latest work on an Inclusive Design OER. Back on December 7, 2016 they led a design crit during the community meeting, presenting an initial version of the Inclusive Design OER. They have taken the feedback from that meeting and iterated on their design and implementation.

Preparation for BIGIDeALisa, JonJan 17
For tomorrow’s Community Design Crit, Lisa and I will be working through an inventory of IDRC resources as part of a ramp-up for work related to the Business Innovation Guide for Inclusive Design and Accessibility (or “BIGIDeA”). For more information on this project, you can find the information on the Certified for Access website.

Since this be somewhat of a working meeting, feel free to bring your own work, and join the discussion as you see fit.

Post Infusion 2.0 Review
Dec 21

Mailing List Thread

Meeting Notes

Despite the fact that we haven’t officially announced the release of Infusion 2.0 ( still a few PRs left for the Infusion-Docs ), we’d like to organize a Post Infusion 2.0 review. Where we can talk about some of the TODOs identified while pushing towards the release and other future plans for Infusion.

Because there is no scheduled community meeting for next week, we can make use of the time to hold our review session.
Date: Dec 21, 2016
Time: 2:30 - 4:00pm ET
Below I’ve seeded some topics that I’ve been compiling over the last couple of months.
Infusion
Infusion Docs
  • Deploy versioned documentation as well as in development
  • Establish a practice for tagging new changes in the docs
    • E.g. “Changed in infusion-dev”
  • How do we make fixes to Infusion-Docs when they are tied to a release?
  • Strategies for ensuring that as content changes in the docs, all the pages are updated appropriately.
VideoPlayer
  • VideoPlayer does not work with any recent version of Infusion
    • When / How should we upgrade to latest Infusion
  • Should we remove VideoPlayer from use on our sites?
Social Justice Repair Kit
Dec 20For tomorrow's design crit, we will be brainstorming ideas for the Social Justice Repair Kit. If there is time, I would like to follow-up on the PhET Energy Skate Park text description exercise from 2 weeks ago.

Accessibility in MOOCs: The current state and next stepsFrancisco IniestoNov 30

Presentation

Abstract:
“Providing accessible Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) have the potential to offer flexibility of learning and benefits to all. In my research project I will investigate the perceptions and accessibility-related processes of various stakeholders of MOOC platforms such as designers, content providers and accessibility experts. I will also investigate the experiences, constraints and requirements of learners with and without special needs who are already using MOOCs.  I will carry out accessibility evaluations of MOOC platforms for their usability and accessibility. These are some of the questions my research is proposing to address: how can MOOCs help learners with special needs to improve their knowledge and skills?; how could the accessibility in MOOCs be improved?; and how could MOOCs resources be adapted to meet the accessibility needs of the learners?”
Privacy Needs and Preferences
Nov 29For tomorrow's design crit, we will be talking about Privacy Needs and Preferences. For additional information on this topic, please see the (Floe) Privacy Needs and Preferences wiki page.

Infusion best practices (why, when, how):
