Notes

  • Last time we met
    • Talked about hiring designer or developer to help with Cataki
    • Jutta is meeting with Oak tomorrow to discuss this
  • IDRC’s role around co-design
    • We’re not building the app, but we can help with the co-design process
    • In order to do design on the app, we’re hoping you can recruit catadores, who have a stake in using the app
    • With other partners on this project, we’re doing codesign on other tools in the platform coop development kit
    • Are there other tools that are a part of this project that would be useful for you that we can do some co-design on? Ex. Learning commons
  • Co-design
    • Kike: We must have 2.0 version of our app in 2019
      • Funding from companies we’ve been dealing with, or even a part of a prize we might win this week
      • We need to modernize our app
      • Want an incentive program in our app
      • Not sure if it’s going to be the same app or a different type of tool
        • Traceability of material is a concern - we must have some data on traceability - this might be a different app
      • For cataki, we don’t want to be a tech company - we don’t want to take our eyes away from the catadores. We don’t plan on having a team of IT guys here at cataki or PMC - so we need some cooperation / help of someone to redesign and program the new version
        • Also plan on having partnership so they can be responsible for our tech - but not in house - they are too expensive in brazil
      • The app needs to be more user friendly
        • We need to have the good catadores showing up on the top of the list
        • We need to have “my favourite catadores” - right now you have to call 3-4 ppl until someone will come pick up your recyclables
        • We have a worry - we don’t want to become a tech company
        • We can hire someone, but we could definitely use help of you guys
        • We’ve been talking to different digital companies to work on 2.0 version - but we’re not experts on the app
        • Cataki app is for the users - for ppl who want material collected
        • We also have 1 or 2 other apps where we need some help
        • We’re also going to restaurants etc to get catadores to be responsible for their material
        • If the collection is done properly, if the guys show up at the time they show up, we need to know through some kinda app that the collection was not done and get someone else to go do it
        • These are the products that are related to cataki, but we’re not sure if it needs to be IN cataki, or another app
    • Dana: what i’m hearing is
      • Cataki doesn’t want to be a tech company so you’ll be hiring someone from outside
      • Colin: We can help with the user friendly side of things, talk to your community to see what they need, and be contact point with companies you might be talking to
        • Do you have companies or people you might want to work with?
      • Kike: Last year the server fell off
        • We hired a very small company, I knew this guy from school
        • Get the app on a level where it doesn’t fall off or drop or have breakdowns
        • We modernized the app a little bit, especially on the back-end - get some more info from the app itself
    • Dana: so it sounds like there are 3 groups of stakeholders
      • Catadores
      • Customers
      • Some tracking that you’re doing to keep track of the numbers
      • Do you think it’s realistic to try to have co-design session where we can bring in these stakeholders to do the codesign, including the catadores
      • Kike: I think that is really important and we need that
        • The products we have here.. The catadores will need to get more info from the app
          • The way it is now, they get a call or a whatsapp message and they do the pickup
          • But right now we are closing deals with bars, small restaurants
          • And these are people who need fiscal note or something the collection was done officially
          • These guys will have to become.. Will need to be paid through some kind of app, the money will become less real as it is today and more virtual
          • Definitely will be great to get their feedback on how to make it easy for them since its not something they’re very used to - some of them don’t have a very good phone package or tech package
          • What’s the easiest way for them to get into this tech world? Understanding that would be great
          • Sometimes we think something would be best for them - but they come up with another idea
          • It would be great to hear them, and see what they expect since we are asking them to come into the digital world, what’s the best way to do them - we might frighten them
        • For the users
          • They send us mail all the time, this could be better, this could be better, etc
          • But why don’t you guys do this
          • It would be great to hear both sides of the equation
      • Dana: Ok great, it’s more logistics now
        • How many people, with who, bringing them together or separate
      • Dana: With other partners, we’re doing embedded co-design
        • We can’t be there in person
        • Passing on info on how to facilitate a session, what activities you can do - we want some members to be the facilitators on site
        • We should get some info before we launch the 2.0 version
    • Dana: Do you think it’d make more sense to focus on the app itself?
      • Do you think for cataki, just focus on those pieces? Or do you also.. Learning commons, other tools… do you think you’d want to do co-design around that
      • Kike: We can see some other small sites here in brazil… tips… relationship with users or not users so far.. If you could talk to people in general with that
    • Dana: ok, one session could be on the app 2.0, the other can be expanded for other digital tools that could be helpful
      • Kike: We need some evaluation on catadores service
      • Stars on uber - we need something like that
      • If you want to donate an extra dollar or so, do it right on the app
    • Colin: there are some simlarities with other coops
      • SEWA needs some marketing or review or other things, so there are some common connections that might help
      • Dana: yeah, because we have limited time and scope, we’re trying to identify those similarities, we’re focusing on those
  • Details of logistics
    • Recruitment
      • Do you think there’s a problem with not having people from different states?
        • Is it worth having people on skype from other cities? Or people from Sao Paulo?
        • Could consider remote participation or a remote only session
        • Carole is moving up north, could do a 2nd  session there as well
    • Timing
      • Early June or mid June to do co-design if that works for you
      • Dana: Mundano said he wanted to time it so that when you hire someone to the development, they can benefit from that
        • When do you think you can hire someone?
        • Kike: the guy who was helping us… we just went through a voting experience this 20 days where Cataki needed voting for 1 part of the price - project for getting votes on social media - we are getting used to him around, we talked to him about 2.0 and he suggested a design thinking workshop
        • So it might be good to have him join us
    • Venue
      • We can do it here, what’s a good number of ppl?
      • Dana: 10-15 people, 20 gets a bit big
      • It also depends on how much money you have for people
      • We can do our office - we can fit 10-15 people
    • Money
      • $4000 USD for each partner
      • 1 section with catadores, other with users
    • Facilitators
      • Kike: If you guys think I could be prepared for that, or show videos of how you guys mediate, I’m sure I can do it
      • Colin: we can teach you
      • Dana: Some of what i sent you sounds formal because it’s a part of the approval process, but it doesn’t need to be formal at all
  • Next steps
    • Kike to go through material in more detail
    • Kike to think about how to recruit folks for the new session
    • We can then come together to do more detailed planning
