Bodies in Translation Meeting - September 27, 2017
Dana, Colin, Alan, Sepideh, Andrea, Tracy
What will the “improv” warmups look like?
How can these be unintimidating and non-excruciating :)
Low-energy warmup / icebreakers
How do we want to facilitate the session?
Have had a couple of people leading, then floating during group activities
Put a “facilitator” in each group
Folks who are particularly interested or comfortable - draw them out to help facilitate
Someone in this session might express interest in facilitating the next one - one way to provide continuity between sessions
+1 to being able to shift groups - mixing it up
Bring plan to the group at beginning of session -
How to work through differences in needs?
Could break up into groups with different approaches, then can reflect on those different approaches
This could work with having a collection of design activities to choose from
How detailed do we want to get with designing the UI etc?
Let people go as far as they want
Some folks more comfortable with sketching details etc
Make space for range from abstract concepts to detailed
How do we form the groups?
Check with Jon and Caren about the Create-a-thon
Do the groups last all day, or will we mix them up throughout?
Consider forming the groups as the invite list is being formed?
Create-a-thon used toys - each participant was given a type of toy
ALAN WANTS TOYS
We could do something similar using art or ?
Goals - What Are They?
This will help to inform how we set up the day
Related to goals - what kind of preparatory information do we want to give participants ahead of the day?
A balance of not too much not too little
Use some of the goals questions?
With digital storytelling they often give a lot of info, but folks don’t always prepare
Good to share the knowledge that we have, rather than not, if it’s important to the activity
Not sharing the info sets up a different dynamic - trying to be “unbiased”, power dynamics get set up - participants wonder - am I getting it right?
Pedagogical possibilities of the platform
How could it be used to teach differently?
How could it help people think about teaching differently?
Who’s pedagogy for what purpose?
Higher ed and arts ed - including community arts ? K12?
What extensions and affordances might allow the platforms use in different contexts?
Add questions to the list as we think of them - best to add before Tuesday before Andrea Tracy and Carla meet again
Andrea will add invite blurb to google doc
Will begin by distributing the invite to Andrea/Tracy/Carla’s network, then do a second wave to broader networks as needed
Include some of the schedule in the invite - make it visually interesting as well as accessible
Really just need to have someone convert the Word doc into pdf and send it back to Andrea
Alan will try on Windows computer
Goals for the Co-Design Sessions (from Tracy, Andrea and Carla’s Planning)
The co-design session will explore how we can effectively share knowledge generated over the course of the grant with different users. Broadly, the goals of the co-design sessions are to explore what the knowledge platform could be, what potential users want to see in a platform, and how users would want to engage with the platform.
More concretely, we are asking:
- What are the pedagogical possibilities of an interactive knowledge platform?
- “How this platform can be practically used in classroom settings” (both in content and form)
- What forms will the “interactivity” take?
- What modalities will be most useful for different target audiences (i.e., visual, voice, text, etc.)
- Under what conditions would people want to use the platform, and for what ends?
- How can we attend to the needs of different audiences at the same time?
- How can we hold multiple sets of accessibility needs while designing the platform?
- How can the platform spark the curiosity of those who might not otherwise imagine inclusive ways of working?
Our main audiences include:
- Artists
- Designers
- Educators
- People who might not otherwise be thinking about non normative models of embodiment in their practice
- Activists
- Historians
- Community members
